What is Autism ?" Having Autism is like living in a foreign country where you don't know the language or like trying to learn the rules of a very difficult game" A.S.AAutism is a social & neurobiological disorder. It affects at least 1 in every 150 children (CDC report) .It is more common than Down Syndrome. In Pa alone it has risen 876% in the past 10 years. There are structural differences in the brain as well as metabolic & chemical differences .It is poorly understood due to it's complexity & neglect in research (and funding). Autistics don't express their emotions the same way as a typical person does. Fear, stress and frustration are the most often displayed, yet they also show concern and genuine affection. They often require direction on displaying their emotions in a socially appropriate way. Many people with Autism have special abilities , because they have the ability to focus on their area of interest with a determined singlemindedness. People with Autism may have a different way of seeing, hearing or feeling things. Some may have trouble communicating, some can't speak at all , others may point or make gestures . source unknown |
